Red with Yellow centered feathered Hawaiian rattlers.
Vibrant colored feather gourds used in Hawaiian hula add excitement to the dance. Listening to the rattle of the gourd and watching the vibrant color of feathers also tell a story.
Whether is be telling of the warriors or rain drenched hillsides, the Uli Uli add the thrill of sound to the hula.
The grapefruit-sized gourd from the la'amia tree was dried, hollowed out, and after a few pebbles were put inside, often decorated with bird feathers to create the uli'uli, which is still widely used today in both ancient and modern hula.
